Archaeology of the Mabinogion

This early medieval period in Wales remains mysterious – not for nothing is it known as the Dark Ages. It is hoped that further excavation will help us understand the site better archaeologically and shed some light on the relationship between myth and landscape.

averagearchaeologist asked: Hello! Thanks for following, and I hope your dig season goes well!

Thanks - drop by if you are in the Wild West….

bagendtreasuretrove asked: Hooray for Wales! ^_^ I'm from Newport, whereabouts are you from? :)

Hey, I am based at the Archaeology Department at Lampeter University.

Dowsing versus geophysics....

  • The magnetometer broke on the first day. Thirty eager diggers ready to de-turf - but where? We resorted to dowsing that worked superbly and we managed to locate the ditched enclosures from last year. Turned out to be bang-on. Did we really need to spend £10,000 on complex, high-tech machinery after all?
